Rocky Bay Beach, Bathing beach in Southern District, Hong Kong.
Rocky Bay Beach is a beach in the Southern District of Hong Kong, shaped by large rock formations that line the shore. It has no lifeguard service or shark prevention nets, which means swimming is not permitted there.
The beach was closed to swimmers in 1988 after sewage discharged from Shek O Village and nearby residential areas raised environmental concerns. The closure has remained in place since then.
Rocky Bay Beach sits behind the busier Shek O Beach and draws walkers and hikers who come to explore the shoreline rather than swim. The rock formations along the water's edge give the place a raw, open feel that is quite different from the sandy beaches nearby.
Since swimming is not allowed, the best way to spend time here is by walking along the rocks and exploring the tidal pools at low tide. The beach is reachable on foot from Shek O Beach along a short coastal path.
The rock pools along the shore shelter small crabs, sea urchins, and fish that gather when the tide goes out, making this one of the better spots in Hong Kong for watching marine life up close. The pools are easy to find and need no special equipment to explore.
