Cape Collinson Battery, Artillery battery in Eastern District, Hong Kong
Cape Collinson Battery is a coastal fortification on the eastern shore of Hong Kong Island featuring multiple gun emplacements and observation points spread along the waterfront. The installation was positioned to monitor the Tathong Channel and detect threats approaching from the sea.
The fortification was built in the late colonial period as part of Hong Kong's defense system to protect ships and trade routes from attacks. It was constructed during a time when Britain was strengthening military control over the region and its waters.
The fortification reflects British colonial military methods and engineering approaches that shaped Hong Kong's development during that era. Walking through the site reveals how defensive thinking influenced the layout and construction of the coastal settlement.
The site is accessible via marked hiking trails that depart from Chai Wan MTR station and head eastward along Cape Collinson Road toward the coast. Proper footwear and plenty of water are recommended for exploring the grounds and viewing the gun emplacements.
Ancient rock carvings discovered near the site in 2018 are located about 11 meters above sea level and have been officially designated as a monument of Hong Kong. These engravings hint at human activity in the area long before the military installation was built.
