Tin Hau temple in Shek O, Temple of the Sea Goddess in Shek O, Hong Kong

Tin Hau temple in Shek O is a sanctuary dedicated to the sea goddess, featuring traditional Chinese design with carved beams, glazed tile roofs, and detailed decorative work. The structure combines artistic elements with its role as a place of worship for the maritime community.

The sanctuary was built before 1891 and stands as a Grade III historic structure from that period. Its construction reflects the spiritual needs of Shek O's early fishing community and their connection to the sea.

Fishermen and visitors present incense and fruit offerings at the altar to request blessing for voyages and safe returns. This practice reflects how the local community maintains its bond with the sea and the role of divine protection in daily maritime life.

The temple is open daily from sunrise to sunset, with visitor numbers rising significantly during the annual Tin Hau Festival celebrations in spring. Plan to arrive early during festival season if you want to explore the space without crowds.

Inside the temple stand statues of two guardian figures, Chin Lei Ngan and Shun Fung Yi, representing enhanced sight and hearing for maritime navigation. These guardians highlight the specific qualities valued for sailor safety at sea.
