Alta Ski Area, Ski resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, US
Alta Ski Area is a ski resort with 2,614 acres of terrain in Little Cottonwood Canyon, ranging between 8,530 and 11,068 feet in elevation. The location receives approximately 546 inches of annual snowfall, creating consistent coverage across the mountain throughout the season.
The resort began in 1938 when the Collins chairlift was constructed from repurposed mining equipment, marking the area's first installation. Official operations launched in January 1939, establishing it as a destination for winter sports in Utah.
The resort carries forward its Norwegian heritage through the Alf Engen Ski School, named after the pioneer who recognized the area's potential for winter sports. This connection to skiing's early days shapes how visitors experience instruction and the local approach to the sport.
Eight lifts access the terrain across different skill levels, with runs for beginners, intermediates, and advanced riders. Arriving early helps avoid longer waits during peak season.
The resort remains one of only three in the US that exclusively serves skiers and does not permit snowboarders. This choice reflects its traditional philosophy and historical focus on classical skiing.
