Quesnel Lake, Glacial lake in British Columbia, Canada.

Quesnel Lake is a glacial water body in British Columbia that stretches roughly 100 kilometers and covers about 266 square kilometers of surface. The basin sits at roughly 728 meters elevation with steep shorelines and alpine surroundings.

The lake became known through early settlement and trade routes that used its deep form for regional navigation. A major shift occurred in 2014 when the Mount Polley mine tailings dam failed and released material into the water.

The Carrier peoples have used this lake for generations and developed deep connections to its waters. The waterway and surrounding lands remain important to their traditional ways of life and stories.

Visitors can reach the lake by boat, small aircraft, or helicopter, with lodges scattered along the shoreline. The best time to visit is May through September when water travel conditions are most favorable.

At roughly 511 meters deep, this is the deepest lake in British Columbia and one of the world's deepest fjord lakes. This extreme depth creates one-of-a-kind conditions for water temperature and ecosystems found in few other places.
