Durrat Al Bahrain, Artificial island complex in southern Bahrain.
Durrat Al Bahrain is an artificial island complex with 15 islands arranged in patterns of six atolls and several fish-shaped formations spread across the development area. Two causeways link the islands to the mainland and provide access to residential neighborhoods and marina facilities.
Construction started in 2004 as an ambitious residential development project backed by the Bahraini government and Kuwait Finance House. The undertaking was designed to create a new living model for the growing population.
The neighborhoods blend contemporary waterfront living with traditional Bahraini architectural forms you can recognize in the building designs. Walking through, you notice how local design elements appear in the layout and appearance of the residential areas.
The islands are easily accessible from the mainland via two causeways, making arrival and exploration straightforward. The area is spread out, so familiarizing yourself with the layout of the different islands before visiting helps with navigation.
The islands were deliberately shaped into atoll and fish patterns, giving the project a playful and recognizable design from above. This surprising geometric arrangement makes the island complex particularly noteworthy when viewed from the air.
