Brunei International Airport, International airport in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei
Brunei International Airport is the main gateway to the sultanate near the capital and receives up to three million travelers annually in its terminal building. In addition to passenger facilities, the airport operates cargo areas that handle up to 50,000 tonnes of goods per year.
Construction of the airport began in the early 1970s to meet growing demand for air travel in the region, and the facility opened in 1974. The opening marked an important step in connecting the sultanate with international markets and destinations.
The terminal includes a dedicated mosque for travelers, allowing visitors to witness the central role of Islam in the daily life of the sultanate. The prayer rooms are open to all passengers and demonstrate the religious practice that shapes public life in Brunei.
Taxis run regularly between the airport and the city center of Bandar Seri Begawan and take about a quarter of an hour for the journey. Fares typically range between ten and twenty Bruneian dollars, depending on the time of day and the provider chosen.
The runway extends over three and a half kilometers (about 2.2 miles) and ranks among the longest in Southeast Asia. This length allows very large aircraft such as the Airbus A380 to land, making the airport a rare destination for these types of planes.
