Mittelberg, Mountain municipality in Kleinwalsertal, Austria
Mittelberg extends across 96 square kilometers of mountainous terrain at 1,200 meters elevation in the Bregenz district of Vorarlberg.
The settlement originated around 1300 when five Walser families from Tannberg established their homes after crossing the Hochalppass mountain pass.
The municipality forms part of the Kleinwalsertal valley, where German remains the primary currency zone despite being within Austrian territory.
The municipality contains three connected villages along the Breitach stream and maintains direct road access exclusively through German territory.
Mittelberg operates under special customs arrangements as a functional Austrian exclave, requiring all traffic to pass through German territory.
