University of Dhaka, Public university in Dhaka, Bangladesh
The University of Dhaka is a public institution in central Dhaka that operates across a large campus with thirteen faculties, eighty-two departments, and eleven institutes. It serves around 33,500 students and offers academic programs in the humanities, sciences, and social disciplines.
The university was founded in 1921 under British colonial rule and quickly grew into a center for Bengali education and political movements. It played an important part during the Language Movement in 1952 and later in the events leading to the country's independence.
The campus holds monuments and memorials that honor students who took part in political and social movements shaping the nation. These sites are regularly visited and show how closely the institution connects to national identity.
The campus is walkable and covers a large area, with main pathways leading to faculties and libraries. Visitors should note that some sections are restricted to students, while public areas such as Curzon Hall are generally open to enter.
The Faculty of Science operates from Curzon Hall, a red-brick building constructed in the early 20th century that combines British and Mughal elements. The structure was originally designed as a town hall before it was repurposed for academic use.
