The National University is a public institution in Gazipur District coordinating a network of more than 2000 affiliated colleges across the country. The central administrative building in Gazipur District organizes examinations, curricula, and academic standards for students enrolled at these affiliated institutions.
Parliament passed an act in 1992 to establish the university and transferred supervision of colleges previously affiliated with the University of Dhaka to it. This reform aimed to expand access to higher education in regions far from older urban universities.
The institution takes its name from its nationwide role in coordinating higher education across the country. Students gather at the central campus while most attend classes at affiliated colleges in their own towns and villages.
