Pundranagar, Archaeological site in Bogura District, Bangladesh
Pundranagar is an archaeological site in Bogura District featuring a rectangular fortified settlement along the Karatoya River. The ruins include defensive walls, ancient gateways, residential foundations, and various structural remains layered across the site.
A limestone inscription in Prakrit script dating to the third century BCE documents the settlement's origins and antiquity. The layers of remains indicate the site was occupied and rebuilt across several centuries.
The site reflects layers of Buddhist and Hindu practices visible in temple remains and household objects scattered across the grounds. Walking through, you can sense how different beliefs shaped the daily life of people who lived here.
Plan for several hours to properly explore the scattered ruins across the site. Good footwear and water are useful since the grounds are open and terrain can be uneven in places.
The settlement had direct river connections through the Karatoya allowing trade and exchange with distant regions like Nepal and Tibet. These water routes facilitated the movement of goods and ideas across vast distances.
