Tumuli of Libersart, Archaeological burial mounds in Tourinnes-Saint-Lambert, Belgium.
The Tumuli of Libersart are two ancient burial mounds located near Walhain in Belgium. The western mound rises to about 4.5 meters in height, while the eastern one reaches roughly 6.2 meters, with each situated in different surroundings: one set within woodland and the other across cultivated fields.
These burial mounds date back to the Roman period and were excavated in 1910 and 1911 by the Archaeological Society of Brussels. The investigation of the western mound revealed traces of wooden stakes, suggesting earlier construction methods used at the site.
These burial mounds represent one of fifty identified tumuli in the Hesbaye region, spanning across Walloon Brabant, southern Limburg, Liege, and northern Namur provinces.
The site is easy to locate as the two mounds stand about a hundred meters apart within the Hesbaye walking region. Visitors should note that one mound is surrounded by woodland while the other sits on open cultivated land, which affects accessibility from different angles.
The two mounds form part of a network of more than fifty burial mounds scattered across the Hesbaye region, connected by a dedicated walking route that allows visitors to explore multiple ancient sites in a single journey.
