Shipka Memorial Church, Eastern Orthodox church in Shipka, Bulgaria
The Shipka Memorial Church exhibits five golden onion-shaped domes and a bell tower rising 53 meters above the mountain landscape of Stara Planina.
The church construction started in 1885 and finished in 1902 to commemorate the Russian and Bulgarian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.
The interior walls display 34 marble plates inscribed with names of Russian regiments and Bulgarian volunteers who participated in the Battle of Shipka Pass.
Visitors can access the church daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with appropriate dress required including covered shoulders and head scarves for women.
The church bells, weighing up to 12 tons, were manufactured using melted cartridges collected from the battlefields of the Russo-Turkish War.
