The lodge was commissioned by Tsar Ferdinand I in the early 20th century as a royal residence and hunting retreat in the mountains. The building reflects the Bulgarian royal family's vision of combining country life with luxury and leisure.
The palace design reflects both Orthodox and Catholic religious influences, showing the mixed faith traditions within the Bulgarian royal family. Visitors can still see these religious elements today in the decoration and architectural details throughout the building.
The location is deep in the mountains and difficult to access, so visitors should allow ample time for travel and prepare with sturdy footwear. The forest paths can present varying conditions depending on season and weather, making good shoes essential.
