Baffinland Iron Mine, Iron ore mine on Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada
Baffinland Iron Mine is an iron ore mine on Baffin Island, in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, well above the Arctic Circle. The site includes open-pit mining areas, an ore processing facility, and a port at Milne Inlet used to ship the ore out by sea.
Iron ore was first identified on Baffin Island in the 1960s, but the deposit sat untouched for decades due to the remoteness of the location. Development work picked up in the 2000s and the mine began shipping ore in 2015 after a long permitting and construction process.
The mine sits on Inuit land, and its presence is closely watched by nearby communities. Conversations about land use, caribou migration, and sea ice are part of everyday life in this part of Nunavut.
The mine is an active industrial site and is not open to the public. Access requires authorization from the operating company, and anyone traveling to this part of Nunavut needs to be prepared for Arctic conditions year-round.
The port at Milne Inlet is only accessible by sea for a short window each summer, when the sea ice retreats enough to allow ships through. All of the ore produced during the year has to be loaded and shipped out during those few ice-free weeks.
