E1 European long distance path, Long-distance hiking path from North Cape to Sicily
The E1 is a long-distance hiking path that connects six countries from the far north to the Mediterranean south. The trail crosses fjords, forests, plains, and mountains as it moves through Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.
The path was created to link European countries and encourage people to walk across borders and cultures. Different sections received official marking and maintenance over time as the project grew.
Walking through villages and towns along the route reveals how people in each country relate to hiking and outdoor life. Local groups manage different sections and connect visitors with regional ways of moving through the landscape.
Camping rules and accommodations differ by country: some allow wild camping, others require designated sites. Check local conditions and trail markings before starting each section, as standards vary widely.
The trail connects two extremes of Europe, from the northernmost continental point to the southern Mediterranean coast. This end-to-end journey crosses dramatically different climates and natural worlds in a single walk.
