Sanctuaire marial d'Abidjan

The Marian Shrine of Abidjan is a modern cathedral featuring a 53-meter conical bell tower made of reinforced concrete with blue-painted spiral roofs designed for natural ventilation. The structure holds about 800 people and blends practical design with distinctive architecture.

Cardinal Bernard Yago started construction in 1985 with financial support from President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, and the project was finished in 1987. The building arose during a period of growth for Abidjan.

Inside you can see artworks by local artist Paul Siaka Coulibaly depicting the Virgin Mary as an Ivorian woman and scenes of the Passion. These pieces blend European religious themes with African artistic traditions.

The sanctuary is open to visitors during the day and holds regular services. It is easy to find because the tall bell tower is visible from various parts of the Attécoubé district.

At the tower top sits a 6-meter stained glass window showing the Virgin Mary in Assumption, while an 11-meter statue stands outside the building. These two works create a striking visual impression from a distance.
