50 Moganshan Road, Arts district in Shanghai, China

50 Moganshan Road is an arts district in Shanghai containing over 120 galleries and studios housed in repurposed industrial buildings. The converted spaces showcase contemporary artworks from Chinese and international artists spread across the site.

The district began around 2000 when an artist opened the first studio in the former Chunming Slub Mill. This initial step sparked a gradual transformation of the industrial site into an arts hub.

The galleries display rotating exhibitions showcasing works by both established and emerging artists from China and beyond. You'll find paintings, sculptures, photography, and digital installations spread across different spaces that reflect the current art scene.

Most gallery spaces offer free entry and typically open from 10 AM to 7 PM on regular days. Wear comfortable shoes when exploring since the district spreads across multiple buildings that require walking between them.

The area grew organically as artists moved in seeking affordable studio space in the abandoned mill buildings. This grassroots development, born out of economic necessity rather than planning, distinguishes it from purpose-built art centers.
