Guangdong Olympic Stadium, football stadium
The Guangdong Olympic Stadium, also known as the Aoti Main Stadium, is a large football venue in Guangzhou with seating for more than 80,000 people. The building features petal-shaped roof layers and colorful seat sections arranged in different areas and connected by a ribbon-like pattern.
Construction of the stadium began in late 1998 and was completed in 2001, with designs created by American architecture firm Ellerbe Becket. It originally served as a venue for China's ninth National Games and was intended as part of preparations for the 2008 Summer Olympics, which were later relocated to Beijing.
The stadium is also known as the Aoti Main Stadium, and its design reflects Guangzhou's nickname as the Flower City. The petal-shaped roof layers and colorful seating sections make it a visual landmark where people gather to experience major sporting events.
The stadium is easily accessible by public transportation and located in an area with other facilities like shopping centers and parks. Visitors should plan their arrival ahead of time, as major events can draw crowds and create long walking distances.
The roof was designed by the American firm to resemble layered flower petals, honoring Guangzhou's reputation as the Flower City. At the center of the roof sits a specially lit tower that houses the Olympic flame and glows at night, visible from far across the city.
