Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture

The prefecture spans 60,261 square kilometers across southern Sichuan, encompassing mountainous terrain, agricultural lands, and numerous isolated settlements at high elevations.

The prefecture was formally established on October 1, 1955, as part of China's administrative restructuring to recognize ethnic minority regions in the country.

The region maintains the largest Yi ethnic population in China, with traditional practices including distinctive music, dance performances, and ceremonial gatherings throughout the year.

The prefecture contains seventeen administrative divisions, including two county-level cities, fourteen counties, and one autonomous county, with Xichang serving as the capital.

Many inhabitants reside in cliff villages positioned at 800-meter heights, accessing their homes through steel ladders installed to replace previous wooden structures.
