Tianmu Mountain

Tianmu Mountain is a mountain range with two main peaks located within a protected nature reserve near Hangzhou. The area features thick forest cover, alpine springs, and several temples scattered across its slopes.

The mountain was recognized as an important site during the Tang Dynasty when Buddhist scholars settled here to establish temples. Over centuries, a network of religious buildings developed that continues to shape the character of the place.

The mountain has served as a spiritual destination since ancient times, with temples built into its slopes where monks still practice today. Walking through the forest, you encounter prayer sites and stone monuments that mark the continuing connection between the landscape and Buddhist practice.

The best way to explore the mountain is on foot using marked trails that pass through different elevations and forest zones. Bring plenty of water and be prepared for changing weather, as higher altitudes can be cooler and cloudier.

The mountain is home to an unusual species of cedar that grows nowhere else in the region, with some specimens believed to be over 1,000 years old. These trees represent living links to an ancient forest ecosystem that has remained relatively unchanged for millennia.
