Tomb of Qian Liu

Tomb of Qian Liu, Ancient imperial tomb in Lin'an District, Hangzhou, China

The Tomb of Qian Liu sits on a hilltop in Zhejiang Province and displays stone carvings along with architectural features from the Five Dynasties period. The site encompasses multiple areas with different structures and decorative elements from this historical era.

The burial site was built in the late 10th century for Qian Liu, founder of the Wuyue Kingdom, who ruled the region from 907 to 978. Its construction marks a significant moment in the history of this regional power during a fragmented period in China.

The burial site displays craftsmanship from the Wuyue period through ceramics, metalwork, and carved stones that visitors can observe while walking through the grounds. These objects reveal the artistic skills and tastes of the ruling class at that time.

The site lies about 38 kilometers from Hangzhou city center and is accessible by well-maintained paths that lead through the different areas of the tomb. Information panels along the way help visitors understand the archaeological finds and their significance.

In 2001, a major recovery operation returned 175 stolen artifacts to the site, leading to the arrest of 39 suspects involved in the theft. This significant recovery helped preserve an important part of Chinese history.
