Sera Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Lhasa District, China
The monastery spans 114,000 square meters at the base of Pubuchok mountain, containing multiple temples, monastic colleges, and residential quarters for Buddhist scholars.
Sakya Yeshe established Sera Monastery in 1419, developing it into a scholarly institution that educated thousands of monks until significant damage occurred in 1959.
The monastery contains three academic colleges teaching Buddhist philosophy, housing centuries-old texts, intricate murals, and traditional Tibetan religious artifacts.
The monastery opens daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM with an entrance fee of 50 RMB, located 6 kilometers north of central Lhasa.
Monks participate in philosophical debates each afternoon except Sundays, using specific hand gestures and movements to emphasize their arguments about Buddhist doctrine.
