Dapeng Fortress, Military fortress in Longgang District, China
Dapeng Fortress is a walled military complex with stone fortifications and well-preserved structures from the Ming and Qing periods. It contains several historical buildings, museums, and residential areas arranged within a cohesive layout protected by high defensive walls.
The fortress was founded in the late 14th century and became a key defensive position against pirates and foreign powers along the coast. Over the following centuries, it was repeatedly reinforced to withstand various threats to the region.
The fortress displays traditional residences and temples that reflect the daily lives of soldiers and their families over centuries. The narrow streets and stone structures give a sense of how the community was organized and how people moved through this space.
The complex is accessible on foot and has multiple entry points for visitors. The pathways are generally easy to navigate, though some areas have steps and uneven surfaces that require careful footing.
The fortress was overgrown for much of its history and only systematically excavated and restored in recent decades. This rediscovery allowed archaeologists and preservationists to uncover the original structures and understand how the site was built.
