Heshan, county-level city in Jiangmen, Guangdong, China
Heshan is a county-level city in southern Guangdong province that serves as an administrative center with several districts including Shaping, Longkou, and Yayao. Each area has its own character, with traditional houses, local markets, and temples that define the city's street life.
The city was established as a prefecture during the Qing dynasty around 1732. It grew slowly but steadily over the centuries, serving as a local trade center before becoming part of the modern Pearl River Delta economic zone.
Heshan is often called "Crane Mountain" because of a nearby peak that resembles this bird. The Hok San lion dance, an ancient local tradition performed during festivals, is believed to bring good fortune and remains central to the city's identity today.
Navigation in Heshan is straightforward with buses, motorcycles, and bicycles as common ways to get around. Walking through the neighborhoods gives a good sense of daily life and doesn't take long to explore the different districts.
Heshan is known worldwide as a furniture production hub, where about one-tenth of the world's furniture is made. Visitors can see large workshops where craftspeople build and finish chairs, tables, and other wood products.
