Datong-Vulkangruppe, Extinct volcanic group near Yunzhou, China.
The Datong Volcanic Group is a large geological system containing more than 30 dormant volcanoes spread across several counties in northern Shanxi Province. Notable peaks such as Naotou geda, Xiaojia yaotou, and Dongposhan are part of this extensive volcanic complex.
The volcanic formations originated mainly during the Tertiary period, with additional structures from the Quaternary period found in the northern part of the Datong Basin. These different time periods show multiple phases of volcanic activity in the region's geological past.
Local communities built their homes and structures using volcanic stones found nearby, a practical choice that shaped the appearance of villages across the region. You can still see this stone construction reflected in many buildings standing today.
The volcanic landscape extends eastward from Yunzhou with several access points to different peaks and formations. Visitors should know that the terrain is rough and hiking to the higher peaks requires physical effort and suitable footwear.
In 1974, an incorrect report about volcanic activity in the Datong group caused significant alarm among local residents. This incident reveals how closely connected the region remains to its volcanic past.
