Scout Association of Hong Kong, youth organization in Hong Kong
The Scout Association of Hong Kong is a youth organization that welcomes young people from age four to twenty-five across different age groups. It offers specialized programs in water activities and aviation, emphasizing practical activities, outdoor adventures, and the development of teamwork and leadership skills.
The Scouting movement in Hong Kong began around 1909 and was officially registered as a branch of the British Boy Scouts Association in 1914. The network survived world wars and Japanese occupation, was revived in 1945, and gained full membership status in the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1977.
The organization brings together young people from different backgrounds around shared values of cooperation and service. Members wear uniforms and badges that reflect their achievements, creating a visible community that demonstrates respect for nature and others in the city.
Anyone living, studying, or working in Hong Kong can join if they agree to follow Scout promises and laws, with no restrictions based on race, gender, or background. The headquarters is located on Austin Road in Kowloon and provides offices, a shop, and a small museum about Hong Kong Scouting history.
Baden-Powell, the founder of the global Scouting movement, visited Hong Kong in 1912 and inspired local schools and organizations to start Scout troops. This visit marked a turning point in the local history and shaped how Scouting developed in the city for coming generations.
