Hong Kong West Kowloon railway station, Underground railway station in West Kowloon, Hong Kong
Hong Kong West Kowloon railway station is an underground station in West Kowloon, Yau Tsim Mong District, that provides cross-border connections to mainland China. The curved roof is held up by nine tall columns and sits several floors below ground level, surrounded by large waiting halls and passage corridors.
The station opened in 2018 as the southern terminus of a high-speed line to the mainland. Its planning began in the early 21st century as part of a larger project linking Hong Kong's rail network to Chinese long-distance services.
The glass ceiling changes daylight during different hours and creates a sense of openness below ground. Travelers from the city and mainland meet in waiting areas where announcements in multiple languages reflect the cross-border character of the place.
Travelers should allow extra time for border formalities as identity documents and luggage are checked at separate control points. Signage guides in multiple languages through the levels down to platforms deep below the surface.
The border zone inside the station is governed by mainland laws, allowing travelers to complete both customs checks at the same location. This arrangement saves the need to change at another station along the route.
