Discovery Bay, Residential development in Islands District, Hong Kong
Discovery Bay is a housing development in the Islands District on the northeastern coast of Lantau Island, combining apartments, townhouses, and villas built across several phases. The settlement spreads along the waterfront and includes promenades that face the harbor and surrounding hills.
Construction started in 1982 with plans to create a resort-style residential community on the Lantau coast. Over the following decades, additional phases expanded the project and transformed the earlier village landscape of the area.
The settlement was planned without private cars, so golf carts dominate the streets and become part of daily routines. This approach shapes how residents move through their neighborhood and creates a pace of life uncommon elsewhere in Hong Kong.
Ferry services connect the development's pier to Central, while buses run to Sunny Bay and other parts of Lantau. Local shopping centers, schools, and health facilities sit within the settlement and can be reached on foot or by golf cart.
The settlement houses one of the few ice rinks on Lantau, used by both residents and visitors. Near the shopping centers, there is also a small sandy beach where families swim and practice water sports.
