Pubugou Dam, Embankment dam and hydroelectric power station in Sichuan Province, China
Pubugou Dam is an embankment dam on the Dadu River in Sichuan Province, featuring a concrete-faced core structure. Six hydroelectric turbines inside the installation convert the river's flow into electrical power for the region.
Construction began in 2004 on the Dadu River as part of a large-scale hydroelectric development project in Central China. The facility became fully operational by 2010, transforming the river into a major power source for the region.
The dam establishment in 2004 led to extensive population relocations in the Sichuan region, resulting in modifications to local communities and their traditional living patterns.
The dam sits in a mountainous region of Sichuan and is accessible by road during most of the year, though dry seasons offer clearer views. Wear sturdy footwear and check local access rules, as some areas may have visitor restrictions.
The reservoir created by this dam holds water from a tributary of the Yangtze River and submerged an entire valley that once held multiple communities. Creating this lake required moving thousands of residents to newly built settlements higher up the mountainside.
