Qomolangma National Nature Preserve

The Qomolangma National Nature Preserve extends across 33,819 square kilometers of the Himalayan mountain range, containing five peaks over 8,000 meters in elevation.

The Chinese government established the preserve in March 1989, implementing a local volunteer management system called Pendebas instead of external wardens for conservation.

The reserve incorporates Rongbuk Monastery at 4,500 meters elevation and maintains sites connected to Tibetan Buddhism across Tingri, Dinggyê, Nyalam, and Kyirong counties.

The preserve remains accessible to visitors from mid-April to May and October through December, with entry points through the towns of Tingri and Shigatse.

The preserve contains the world's highest agricultural fields at 4,300 meters and houses 2,000 plant species, 53 mammal species, and 206 bird species.
