Qomolangma National Nature Preserve covers a vast stretch of Himalayan terrain across multiple counties, containing several peaks above 8,000 meters in elevation. The land ranges from high plateaus to valleys, encompassing diverse mountain ecosystems within its protected boundaries.
The preserve was established by the Chinese government in 1989 to protect the mountain ecosystem and its inhabitants. Local Pendeba volunteers took on the role of managing and safeguarding the area rather than external officials.
The preserve holds deep spiritual meaning for Tibetan Buddhists, with several monasteries and sacred sites scattered throughout the region. Local communities continue their traditional practices and connection to these holy places today.
The best time to visit is from April to May and October to December, when weather conditions are most favorable for travel. The main access points are through the towns of Tingri and Shigatse, which serve as gateways to the preserve.
The preserve contains some of the world's highest agricultural fields at around 4,300 meters, where farmers grow crops in some of Earth's harshest conditions. The biodiversity is striking, with thousands of plant species and hundreds of animal and bird species thriving in this remote mountain region.
