Gun Club Hill Barracks, Military barracks in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong
Gun Club Hill Barracks is an active military compound on the Kowloon Peninsula, enclosed by Austin Road, Jordan Path, Gascoigne Road, and Chatham Road South. The site contains residential blocks, a military hospital, a primary school, and supply facilities for personnel and their families.
The barracks were established in 1863, in the years following the Second Opium War, and originally housed Indian artillery soldiers known as Gun Lascars. The site served as a key British military base throughout the colonial period before passing to Chinese administration in 1997.
The barracks sit in the middle of one of the densest urban districts in Kowloon, making a military compound an unusual neighbor to apartment blocks and busy streets. Since the handover in 1997, the People's Liberation Army has occupied the site, and its presence is a visible reminder of the change in sovereignty.
The compound is an active military facility and is not open to the public, so entry is not possible. The perimeter streets, such as Austin Road and Gascoigne Road, offer a view of the outer buildings and general layout from the outside.
For nearly 30 years after the site was founded, soldiers lived in tents and temporary wooden structures while the open ground was used mainly for shooting practice. Permanent buildings only began to appear toward the end of the 19th century, gradually giving the compound the form it has today.
