Model Housing Estate, Public rental housing complex in Eastern District, Hong Kong
Model Housing Estate is a residential complex with seven blocks positioned along King's Road between Quarry Bay and North Point, housing around 667 apartments. The buildings display different architectural styles from various decades, ranging from original designs to later reconstructions.
The complex was built between 1951 and 1953 by the Hong Kong Model Housing Society and remains the oldest surviving public housing project in the city. A major restructuring in the 1970s involved demolishing one block and constructing a distinctive T-shaped building in its place.
The estate shapes how residents in this neighborhood live and interact, with shared courtyards and outdoor spaces serving as everyday gathering places. Its presence reflects how the government has addressed housing needs through these long-standing residential communities.
The site is located near MTR Quarry Bay station at Exit C and is therefore easily accessible by public transport. The surrounding neighborhood offers shops, eateries, and green spaces within walking distance.
A striking feature is the massive T-shaped block that emerged in the 1970s and visually distinguishes itself from the older structures surrounding it. This reconstruction integrated portions of neighboring blocks and created an unusual form that shapes the neighborhood's appearance today.
