Ma On Shan Country Park

Ma On Shan Country Park is a large protected area stretching across the eastern New Territories with trails winding through forests and across hillsides. The landscape varies from thick woodland to open ridges where hikers can see distant islands and bays.

Iron ore was mined here for decades, employing thousands of workers until operations ceased in 1976. The land was then set aside for protection, allowing forests to recover and the landscape to return to its natural state.

The park contains scattered remains of old Hakka villages where families once built homes in the valleys and hillsides. Walking through, visitors can spot foundation stones and abandoned structures that hint at daily life from past centuries.

Several entry points connect to bus services from surrounding neighborhoods and villages. Rest stops and camping areas are spaced along the trails, so sturdy footwear is important for comfortable hiking.

The rocky ridges here display rare metamorphic rock formations shaped by ancient volcanic activity millions of years ago. These weathered stone patterns create an unusual landscape that stands out from other hiking areas nearby.
