Memorial Hall of the Boxer Uprising

This memorial museum in Hongqiao preserves the history of a nationwide resistance movement between 1899 and 1901 against foreign influence. The building contains documents, photographs, and personal items that illustrate how people lived and struggled during this critical period.

The original building was constructed as a Taoist temple in 1719. It later became a command center during the major uprising of 1900 when a prominent resistance leader used it as headquarters.

The museum displays how ordinary people joined the movement to oppose foreign control and intervention in their country. Visitors see personal belongings and written records that reveal the beliefs and motivations of those who participated.

The site is situated on Ruyi'an Street and can be reached without difficulty. Plan to spend time reading the detailed explanations alongside the exhibits to fully understand the historical context and significance.

Inside the original temple structure stood an altar where movement leaders performed rituals to invoke protection. Certain ritual objects and protective charms from this practice are preserved and displayed in the museum today.
