New Territories East, Electoral district in New Territories, Hong Kong
New Territories East is an electoral constituency covering the eastern section of Hong Kong's New Territories, spanning four major districts. The area includes North, Tai Po, Sha Tin, and Sai Kung, each with distinct residential, rural, and commercial characteristics.
The area became an electoral constituency in 1998, initially using a party-list proportional representation system. Following major electoral reforms in 2021, the district underwent significant restructuring of its boundaries and governance framework.
The area reflected different political views, with residents supporting various parties and causes over the years. Today, you can see this diversity in local community centers and how different neighborhoods maintain their own character.
The East Rail line connects three of the four districts, making travel between areas straightforward for visitors. Local bus services and smaller transport links reach the more remote neighborhoods and rural sections throughout the region.
The constituency saw its number of seats change multiple times, expanding from five in 1998 to nine by 2012. This growth reflected how quickly the eastern regions were developing and changing.
