Site of the Changxindian Preparatory School for Students Going to France for Work-Study Programs

The Changxindian Preparatory School was a training facility in Beijing where students prepared for study in France in the early 1900s. The preserved brick buildings now display photographs, documents, and learning materials from that era.

The school opened in 1918 and initially accepted students from Hunan province to prepare them for French universities. This program was part of an important educational partnership between China and France during the early Republic period.

The place shows how students learned French and prepared for technical studies before going abroad to continue their education. Personal objects displayed here reveal how serious and focused this preparation period was.

The site is located in the Changxindian Subdistrict and is easily accessible by public transport. Plan to spend time reading information displays, as the exhibit consists mainly of documents and photographs.

Roughly 2,000 graduates traveled to France and returned with knowledge in industry and technical fields. These returning students played a key role in China's modernization in the decades that followed.
