Former Residence of Zhao Yongxian, Ming Dynasty historical residence in Changshu, China
The Former Residence of Zhao Yongxian is a Ming Dynasty dwelling in Changshu organized around three courtyards designed in traditional Chinese architectural style. The buildings display characteristic features of the period, with the notable Maiwang Gallery occupying the eastern section.
The residence was built during the Ming Dynasty and belonged to Zhao Yongxian, who earned the prestigious jinshi degree in 1571 through the Imperial Examination system. His accomplishment placed him among the educated elite of his time.
The Gallery of Maiwang served as a meeting place for scholars during the Ming period, reflecting the intellectual life of that era. The courtyard spaces show how the residence functioned as a gathering point for people interested in literature and learning.
The residence is located on Nanzhao Lane in Gucheng District and functions today as a gallery showcasing traditional guqin instruments. Visitors can walk through the courtyards and building spaces at their own pace to see the displayed musical pieces.
The residence underwent complete restoration in 2004, with all former inhabitants relocating to ensure the preservation of this national cultural property. The extensive renovation work was essential to stabilize the original structure and maintain its historical integrity.
