Pingtan Strait Rail-Road Bridge, Rail-road bridge in Fuzhou, China
The Pingtan Strait Rail-Road Bridge extends over 16.3 kilometers with a two-level structure placing railway tracks below and highway lanes above. This connection between the mainland and Pingtan Island serves both rail and vehicle traffic on the same route.
Work on the structure started in 2013 as a major infrastructure project to connect the two regions. The highway section became operational in 2020, with the railway following shortly after.
The bridge links mainland China with Pingtan Island, enabling daily movement and exchange between the two areas. It has become a visible marker of regional development and connection for the people who use it regularly.
The bridge itself is not open to pedestrian walking, but it can be viewed from vehicles or trains crossing it. Those wanting to see the structure can view and photograph it from nearby vantage points along the shores.
The construction demanded enormous quantities of materials, making it one of the most resource-intensive bridge projects globally. Combining railway and highway on a single structure is a rare solution for spanning such vast distances.
