The bridge was completed and opened to traffic in 2019 as part of the Xugu expressway development project, which aimed to improve regional connectivity and reduce travel time between rural and urban areas in Guizhou Province.
The bridge is named Hongjun Bridge in Chinese, which refers to the Red Army, commemorating the historical significance of the Long March when Communist forces crossed the Chishui River multiple times during the 1930s.
