Liuguanghe Bridge, Road bridge in Guizhou, China

The Liuguanghe Bridge spans the Wu River with a height of 305 meters and features a main span extending 240 meters across the valley.

The structure held the record for world's highest bridge from 2001 to 2003, surpassing the Royal Gorge Bridge's previous 72-year record of 291 meters.

The bridge represents a milestone in Chinese engineering, demonstrating the nation's infrastructure development capabilities in mountainous regions of Guizhou province.

Travelers can access the bridge via China National Highway 321, which connects the cities of Bijie and Guiyang through the mountainous terrain.

The bridge features a single-cell box girder design that tapers from 13.4 meters at the piers to 4.1 meters at mid-span, supported by a 90-meter tall pier.

World's highest bridges

This collection presents the tallest bridges on Earth, measured by their clearance height above the ground or water below. Most of these structures are located in China, spanning deep gorges and river valleys across the provinces of Guizhou, Yunnan, Hubei, and Sichuan. The designs employ various construction methods including suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and arch bridges. The collection also features notable high bridges in Mexico, India, and Papua New Guinea. These structures demonstrate how modern engineering overcomes difficult mountainous terrain and creates new transportation links. The bridges serve as critical infrastructure for regions previously separated by natural barriers.
