New Baishatuo Yangtze River Bridge, Double-decker cable-stayed railway bridge in Dadukou District and Jiangjin District, China
The New Baishatuo Yangtze River Bridge is a double-decker cable-stayed railway structure spanning 5.3 kilometers across the river in Chongqing. The upper level carries four passenger train tracks while the lower level supports two freight train lines.
The structure replaced an earlier 1960 Baishatuo Railway Bridge that first connected the region across the Yangtze. It was built to handle growing demand for rail transport and modernize infrastructure in the Chongqing area.
This transportation structure received the Luban Prize for engineering excellence, marking its contribution to Chinese infrastructure development.
Visitors can view the bridge from nearby riverbanks and observation points to appreciate its scale and engineering design. The best views come during daytime when the cable structure and double-deck configuration are clearly visible.
The structure holds records as the first six-line railway steel truss cable-stayed bridge with the largest span and heaviest load capacity worldwide.
