Baishatuo Yangtze River Railway Bridge, Railway bridge in Chongqing, China.
The Baishatuo Yangtze River Railway Bridge is a steel truss railway bridge that crosses the river in Chongqing, connecting two districts on opposite banks. Its longest span stretches about 80 meters across the water, and the entire structure measures roughly 825 meters from end to end.
It was built in 1960 as the first Yangtze crossing in Chongqing and the second railway bridge along the main river section between Yibin and Shanghai. The bridge operated for nearly 60 years until operations ceased in 2019 to prepare for its replacement.
The structure became central to how people and goods moved across the Yangtze, shaping daily life in both districts it connected for generations. It represents the railway's role in opening up the region to broader economic activity.
This is a working railway structure not designed for pedestrian access, as trains use it continuously for transport across the river. To see or photograph it, visitors can find vantage points along the riverbanks near either district.
The original structure was designed and built entirely by Chinese engineers without foreign assistance, making it a notable symbol of technical capability in an era when such large projects often relied on international collaboration. This achievement represented significant confidence in the country's engineering expertise at the time.
