Luitpold tower, Observation tower on Weißenberg mountain, Merzalben, Germany.
Luitpold Tower is an observation tower built from red sandstone on Weißenberg mountain near Merzalben, rising around 35 meters high. A broad staircase with more than 180 steps leads to a viewing platform that offers sweeping views across the Palatinate Forest.
The Gräfenstein Conservation Society started construction in 1895, completing the tower in 1909 with backing from Prince Regent Luitpold. The project reflects the late 19th-century enthusiasm for building viewing structures across the region.
The name honors Prince Regent Luitpold, who backed the project. On the platform, orientation plaques help visitors recognize towns and landmarks spread across the surrounding regions.
The road L496 connects the access points and free parking is available near the tower. The climb is straightforward even though the stairs are long, and there is a resting bench halfway up for taking a break.
A cozy fireplace room at ground level provides a warm spot on cold days. This hidden detail makes the site particularly welcoming for winter visits.
