Moritzburg, Municipality with Baroque castle in Meissen District, Germany
Moritzburg is a municipality in Meissen District featuring a Baroque castle set among lakes and forests in the Saxon countryside. The settlement spreads across relatively flat terrain with several historical structures.
The original settlement was called Eisenburg and was first mentioned in 1294. It gained market town status in 1675 and was renamed Moritzburg in 1934 after the adjacent castle.
The Rüdenhof building houses a museum dedicated to artist Käthe Kollwitz, who lived there during her final months from 1944 to 1945. The place draws visitors interested in her work and legacy.
The municipality is accessible by a narrow-gauge railway connecting Radebeul and Radeburg with regular service during the day. Walking paths link the main sights and are clearly marked.
A royal stud farm was founded here in 1828 and still operates with traditional breeding and training methods. The site offers insight into Saxony's equestrian heritage.
