Zoo Schwerin, Animal park in Schwerin, Germany.
Zoo Schwerin sits between Lake Schwerin and Faulen Lake on terrain shaped by ancient glaciers. The grounds hold around 1500 animals representing approximately 140 species spread across a large wooded landscape.
The facility opened in 1956 and began as a dedicated conservation and education center in northern Germany. It has grown over the decades into a place where visitors encounter animals from many continents.
The Red List Center engages visitors through exhibits about endangered species and habitat protection that relate directly to what people see in the zoo. The displays help connect the animals on view to larger conservation efforts happening worldwide.
The grounds are open daily, with extended hours from March to October for better daylight exploration. Wagon rentals help visitors cover the large area without walking the entire distance on foot.
At the center of the grounds lies a moorland area with a large waterfowl facility housing pink pelicans and multiple flamingo species. This natural setting demonstrates how water birds thrive in habitats designed to match their needs.
