The Steigerwald gives its name to the Steigerwald Formation, a geological layer of the Keuper that appears in several parts of southern Germany. Near Geiselwind, wind-blown sand from the Pleistocene, roughly two million years ago, piled into dunes that still stand out in the terrain.
