Thira Regional Unit, Regional administrative division in South Aegean, Greece.
Thira Regional Unit is an administrative area spanning multiple islands in the southern Aegean Sea. It comprises five municipalities organized under a unified local government, with Fira serving as the main administrative center for the region.
The administrative system was established in 2011 following the Kallikratis reform, which restructured the former Cyclades Prefecture into a new regional organization. This reorganization brought the islands under a unified administrative framework.
Each municipality maintains distinct local traditions, from seasonal festivals to regional cooking that uses fresh Mediterranean produce. People here have deep connections to their island communities and the ways of life that define them.
The islands are connected by regular ferry services that link the different municipalities. Plan extra time for travel between islands, as schedules can vary depending on the season and sea conditions.
The territory includes both well-known and smaller inhabited islands, from Santorini to lesser-visited places like Anafi and Sikinos. These smaller islands provide a different pace of life, even though they sit just short ferry rides apart.
