Choregic Monument of Nikias, Ancient memorial structure at Acropolis, Greece

The Choregic Monument of Nikias stands between the Theatre of Dionysus and the Stoa of Eumenes, featuring a hexastyle Doric temple design with a square cella.

Constructed in 320-319 BCE, the monument was later dismantled during late antiquity, with its masonry materials repurposed for the construction of the Beulé Gate.

The monument commemorates Nikias's victory as a choregos in a youth competition, where Pantaleon of Sikyon performed as pipe-player for the composition 'The Elpenor' by Timotheos.

The foundation remains of the monument are accessible within the archaeological zone of the Acropolis, near other significant ancient structures of Athens.

Architect William Dinsmoor identified the exact location of this monument in 1910, following years of incorrect assumptions about its positioning near the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
