Samiko, Archaeological site at Kato Samikon, Greece

The Samiko fortress stands on a limestone hill at 200 meters altitude, featuring massive walls constructed with cube and polygon-shaped blocks reaching 5 meters thickness.

The settlement originated in Mycenaean times and developed into a strategic city controlling trade routes between Pisatis, Triphylia, and western Messenia through multiple eras.

The inhabitants maintained a temple dedicated to Poseidon near the coast, which served as a religious center for six Triphylian cities in ancient times.

Visitors can examine the preserved gateways of the acropolis and observe traces of the ancient fortification walls at 180 meters above sea level.

The site contains the Anigridon cave system where ancient Greeks performed therapeutic treatments using natural fumes for various skin conditions.
