Samiko, Archaeological site at Kato Samikon, Greece

Samiko is an archaeological site perched on a limestone hill featuring massive fortification walls built from cubic and polygonal stone blocks reaching 5 meters thick. The ruins display preserved gateway structures of the acropolis and spread across roughly 200 meters of elevation with multiple layers of ancient settlement.

The settlement began in Mycenaean times and grew into a strategic city controlling trade routes between Pisatis, Triphylia, and western Messenia across multiple historical periods. Its location made it a crucial hub for exchange among the surrounding regions throughout antiquity.

The settlement housed a coastal Poseidon temple that functioned as a religious hub for six Triphylian cities in antiquity. Visitors can still sense this spiritual importance through the physical remains scattered across the hilltop.

The site is best explored on foot, and sturdy footwear is recommended due to uneven terrain and loose stones. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for walking through the ruins and examining the stonework in detail.

The grounds contain the Anigridon cave system where ancient Greeks used natural fumes to treat various skin conditions with therapeutic methods. These early healing practices reveal the medical knowledge of the era and how people drew on natural resources for health care.
